Zombie of Cheshire

Cinnamon Bun

Zombie of Cheshire is the level-five boss of the Wonderland Dungeon and one of Broccoli Bunch’s most dangerous early opponents. It first appears as an almost disembodied cat head with mismatched eyes, a malevolent green eye and a white, milky one, before revealing a huge orange body striped with black and a grin broad enough to suggest that its mouth could swallow Broccoli whole. Its significance lies in the reversal it creates: beneath the dungeon’s eccentric, game-like surface is a predator capable of inflicting severe wounds and overwhelming a much weaker adventurer, yet it is ultimately destroyed by the seemingly gentle power of Cleaning magic.

Identity and Appearance

Zombie of Cheshire is identified by the system as “The zombie of Cheshire, Boss (level 5).” The designation immediately raises the stakes because the surrounding dungeon was understood to range from level two to level four. Broccoli therefore has to confront the possibility that the apparent level limit does not apply to the Cheshire encounter, or that the creature serves as the dungeon’s end boss. The name connects it to the Cheshire-cat image, but its undead status makes that image hostile rather than whimsical.

The creature’s introduction is deliberately incomplete. Broccoli first sees only a cat, or perhaps the head of a cat, slipping into the shadows after biting her. One eye is green and malevolent, the other white and milky, while the enormous mouth twists into a cruel smirk. The delayed full reveal intensifies the threat: when Zombie of Cheshire appears in the center of the stone circle, it is a huge orange-furred cat with black stripes and a grin that seems physically capable of chewing her whole. The progression from partial glimpse to complete monstrous body turns uncertainty into visible horror.

Hunting Broccoli Bunch

Zombie of Cheshire begins its attack with a bite to Broccoli’s backside, tearing through her skirt and into her skin. The wound draws blood down her inner thigh and into her socks, making the encounter frighteningly physical rather than merely theatrical. The creature treats the injury as entertainment, taking pleasure in both the taste of its prey and Broccoli’s startled reactions. Its speech presents the fight as a game in which Broccoli is reduced to a snack or kitten, while the unequal levels make the contest anything but playful from her perspective.

The boss repeatedly uses concealment and sudden movement. A rough tongue passing over its lips is the only warning before another charge, and its open jaws snap shut just after Broccoli escapes. When the attack misses, Zombie of Cheshire disappears like sand in the wind, forcing her to fight an enemy that controls the rhythm of visibility as well as distance. Broccoli’s jumping skill lets her evade some attacks, including a desperate upward kick, but the cat moves with such precision that it appears to anticipate her actions. Its mockery compounds the physical danger by making every defensive success feel temporary.

Broccoli recognizes that she cannot win through ordinary physical combat. The cat is too large, the level difference too great, and the exit lies only a couple of hundred meters down a narrow tunnel that Zombie of Cheshire could traverse with ease. The unblocked passage offers no dependable escape. Her makeshift weapon and jumping ability can buy moments, but neither can overcome the boss’s speed, size, or predatory advantage.

Defeat and Immediate Consequences

The decisive attack comes when Broccoli uses a burst of magic and spends half of her remaining mana. The blast strikes Zombie of Cheshire and causes it to explode into a shower of orange motes. The system then announces that she has defeated Dungeon Boss: Zombie Cheshire, level 5, granting bonus experience both for defeating an enemy above her level and for defeating a dungeon boss. The reward confirms the exceptional difficulty of the encounter and converts survival into measurable advancement.

The victory does not erase the cost. Immediately afterward, Broccoli crashes to her knees and cries while cradling her injured arm; her thigh continues to hurt with an intensity beyond anything she has previously experienced. The system’s notifications arrive at the wrong emotional moment, and she dismisses them with “Not now,” leaving the rewards temporarily out of sight. The scene refuses a clean triumph: the boss is gone, but Broccoli remains shaken, wounded, and forced to endure the body’s aftermath of victory.

Cleaning Magic and the Character’s Contradiction

Zombie of Cheshire’s defeat gives unusual force to the Cinnamon Bun class’s stated purpose. The class describes its bearer as too pure for the world, a perfect support and friend, and urges the cleansing of impurities in the name of love and justice. Broccoli finds the description smug and admits that she can be naive, but the Cheshire battle shows that purity in this system is not passive innocence. Cleaning magic can enter an undead body and destroy it.

This contrast is reinforced by Broccoli’s earlier use of Cleaning magic against a ghost, when the spell shoots into the attacking spirit and makes it burst apart. Her Cleaning skill is initially described simply as the ability to clean, and she first applies it to dust, floors, water, and scrubbing through a weak magical showerhead. Against undead enemies, however, the same vocabulary acquires a violent dimension: cleaning becomes expulsion, purification, and combat. Zombie of Cheshire is therefore not only an enemy defeated by Broccoli’s class; it is the clearest early demonstration that her apparently domestic specialization can function as a weapon.

Place in the Undead and Dungeon Order

Zombie of Cheshire belongs to a wider world in which undead creatures, dungeon cores, evil roots, ghosts, and other mana-born beings are sorted through systems of level, class, skill, and impurity. The Wonderland Dungeon has a Dungeon Core and an Evil Root, while the world’s adventurers distinguish threats according to their magical and biological nature. Zombie of Cheshire’s boss designation places it within that regulated dungeon structure, but its level-five status unsettles the expected boundaries of the site.

The creature also embodies the book’s recurring tension between contamination and classification. Broccoli’s Cleaning magic promises to remove impurities, while the dungeon repeatedly confronts her with ghosts, undead bodies, roots, and other forms that resist ordinary domestic order. Zombie of Cheshire is especially effective as a boundary figure because it combines a familiar animal shape with an impossible undead condition: the recognizable cat becomes a grinning, blood-seeking dungeon predator. Its destruction does not simply remove a monster; it confirms that Broccoli’s power can redraw the boundary between what the dungeon produces and what her class is able to cleanse.
